Sign the Parent Pledge to Talk to Your Child on February 2
Parents and other trusted adults have a responsibility to educate children about all aspects of their health and well-being. Sexuality is a very important part of that conversation.
Parents have the unique opportunity to share their family’s values and perspectives about sexuality while maintaining a warm and loving environment. Open, non-judgmental conversations form the framework for healthy relationships both within and outside the family structure.
Young people are primarily influenced by their parents when it comes to sexual decision-making. They are more likely to delay their first sexual experience and are more likely to use protection. (CDC)
Conversations about sexuality include:
- Anatomy
- Consent
- Respect
- Healthy Relationships
- Decision-making
- Identity
- Puberty
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)
- Pregnancy and Birth Control
Talking to your child requires more than one conversation. However, once you get past that first (sometimes awkward) conversation it gets much easier to continue your chats.
Sign the pledge to talk to your kids for just ten minutes on February 2 to get the conversation started! Challenge your friends to do the same. Perhaps organize a Pre-talk Party to strategize fun ways to engage your kids in the conversation.
